What Roles does the Belt Tensioner Play in the Engine?

2025-05-09

The dynamic adjustment mechanism of the belt tensioner is a key stabilizing device for the engine accessory transmission system. The component maintains a constant tension output under the condition that the elastic modulus of the belt tensioner changes with temperature through the synergistic effect of the preload spring and the damping structure. The dual-degree-of-freedom pivot mechanism enables the tensioner to track the dynamic changes of the belt wrap angle and compensate for the length attenuation caused by the creep effect.

Belt Tensioner

The belt tensioner absorbs the instantaneous impact caused by the crankshaft torque fluctuation and suppresses the lateral vibration mode of the transmission system. The stress relaxation characteristics of the high-carbon steel spring are improved by surface nitriding treatment to ensure that the stiffness attenuation rate during the service cycle is controllable. The multi-layer labyrinth structure of the sealed bearing blocks the intrusion of abrasive particles, and the belt tensioner is combined with solid lubricants to reduce the rotational friction coefficient.

The temperature compensation valve automatically adjusts the flow area of the damping hole according to the change in the viscosity of the lubricating medium to maintain the time domain consistency of the belt tensioner tension adjustment. The essential function of this dynamic balancing device is to establish the minimum slip rate boundary condition between the belt tensioner and the pulley system to ensure the continuity of power transmission.
